20th and 21st of June, The Narvik War and Peace Centre is arranging events in commemoration of it being 75 years since 900 Yugoslav prisoners came to Beisfjord prison camp.
Conference in Narvik 20th of June
As it is 75 years since the first Yugoslav prisoners arrived in Norway, the Narvik War and Peace Centre is having a conference with invited guests. We have a few seats available to the public. Tuesday 20th of June at 12.30-18.30, in the Ragnhild Olstad-Auditorium at the Narvik War and Peace Centre. The conference will have two main parts. The first part is dedicated to the story of Yugoslav prisoners in Norway during WW2. The second part will focus on the post-WW2 relationship between Norway and what was then Yugoslavia. Acknowledged lecturers as Tomislav Dulic from Uppsala will educate us about the prisoners. We will also be seeing a few short films about the prisoners, and a new documentary and a comic book about the Yugoslav prisoners will be presented. Svein Mønnesland has written the history of former Yugoslavia, and leaders of friendship associations with former Yugoslavia will tell about their travels and experiences.
Commemoration in Beisfjord 21st of June
Wednesday 21st of June at 09.30, a commemoration ceremony will be held in Beisfjord. This ceremony is open for the public.
New boards with information about Beisfjord prison camp will be unveiled in Beisfjord. Guests from Vojvodina county in Serbia will be attending, as well as ambassadors, the Mayor of Narvik, and representatives from the friendship association in Serbia and from Nordland county council.
